Fresno County becoming big destination for Ag tourism

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- More families want to know where their food comes from and Valley farms are catering to that trend. Fresno County is becoming a destination for ag tourism.

Fresh berries and peaches are just a few of the 180 varieties of produce ready for customers at Simonian Farms.

"When they come to the San Joaquin Valley, they want fruit," said Dennis Simonian, Simonian Farms Owner.

Dennis sees visitors from around the world every day at his produce stop at Clovis and Jensen. The fresh Valley produce that we may take for granted is a tasty treasure for others.

"People want to come to places like this and they want to see the farmer to see where it was grown, how it was grown, what is going on," said Dennis.

Ag tourism is become so popular, that it's now a prominent feature in the Fresno County visitors guide.

"They come here for an agriculturally related experience. So, for example, maybe a farm to fork restaurant or taking a tour out to the Blossom Trail or the Fruit Trail," said Layla Forstedt, Fresno/Clovis Convention & Visitors Bureau President, and CEO.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau said more people are visiting Fresno County, as spending increased from $1.1 billion to nearly $1.5 billion in 2015.

As for Simonian, he sees the change as more tour buses stop by the store on the way to National Parks for a natural treat.

"It's been really good, our business seems to be on the rise," said Dennis.

From the fruit to fun Simonian Farms offers games, activities, and food to travelers stopping by. It's a unique spin showcasing the ag industry.

With an increase in tourism so far this season, businesses like Simonian Farms said they look forward to entertaining more people from around the Valley and the world this summer season.
