Oakland officer injured in fiery crash following chase

OAKLAND, Calif. -- At least one officer was injured after a crash with another police vehicle following a chase in Oakland on Sunday.

A police car caught on fire following a crash at 38th Avenue and Carrington Street.

The officer was taken to the hospital. Witnesses say he was conscious when an ambulance took him away.

Surveillance video shows an officer pursuing a possible armed suspect in a patrol car going west on 38th Avenue when an Oakland police SUV going south on Carrington Street broadsided the patrol car.

Witnesses say the SUV went up in flames and there were a couple of small explosions.

Neighbors tried to help by bringing out their water hoses and fire extinguishers, but officers told them to stay away for safety reasons and to let the fire department handle it. "We heard a big crash, so we went outside and two police cars hit each other and then we saw a little fire in the engine and before we knew it the fire got bigger and bigger, there was smoke," witness Bjorn Slabbinck said.

Police arrested the suspect they were chasing a short time later at 28th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard where the suspect had crashed into several parked cars.

Officials said the injured officer's condition is unknown at this time.
