Police say a 99-year-old woman who was held hostage by a shooting suspect may have coincidentally saved his life.

Utah police say they tracked down 18-year-old Freddy Velasquez for a shooting when he held a gun to his head and ran into a nearby home.

The home belonged to Doris Wasden, who didn't even hear Velasquez come in. After finally confronting her, Wasden said all they did was talk.

"And I just got back in bed and he come in again and then he started to talk to me. And I said I can't hear you, I can't hear you.' so then he realized I was a very old woman, so he was pretty nice to me after that," Wasden explained.

SWAT negotiated with Velasquez for hours, telling him to let Doris out, which police say he did before he finally surrendered.

Wasden and her family say they forgive Velasquez for his actions.
