Fresno Library hosts Oath Ceremony for new citizens

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The United States welcomed 22 new citizens in a Fresno library Saturday.

Mays Abdulnabi hid behind the American Flag Saturday just seconds after getting the paperwork making it her flag.

The 4-year-old is the youngest of 22 kids from eight countries who pledged their allegiance and got American Citizenship in a ceremony at a public library already celebrating an immigration story.

The Big Read is focused on The Latehomecomer, which tells the story of a Hmong family's journey from Laos to the U.S., a story very familiar to Immigration Services Officer Lynne Feldman.

"And I laugh at times because years ago I got to be a federal worker. I represented the United States. Years ago, we represented no country because no country wanted us," Feldman said.

The young immigrants paraded through the library as they learned some of the benefits of citizenship and heard what it took to get to this day.
