The Fresno Unified School District serves almost 100,000 meals every day to its students and is looking for ways to continue giving them access to fresh food and know where it is coming from.
The district met with local farmers at the Fresh Grub Meet and Greet to teach them what they are looking for when it comes to providing local foods to their students.
The district talked about topics from menu planning, to required calorie counts for each grade level.
Sunnyside Packing Company was in attendance at the meet and greet, and says while they hope to sell their products to the district, they also want to teach students about the agriculture industry.
The Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission says this program will be a good opportunity for job creation, economic development, healthy eating for students, and bridging a farm-to-school model here in the Valley.
