Hanford City Council votes to allow medical marijuana cultivation in industrial zone

HANFORD, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Hanford City Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to allow the manufacture of medical marijuana in the city's industrial zone.

The discussion first started last fall when a bay-area based medical marijuana company expressed interest in growing cannabis at the Old Pirelli Tire Factory-- but the company canceled those plans in March.

Now, two other companies have given the city $50,000 each to help craft the new ordinance.

"Right now we're looking at $10-million worth of job creation. Over 1,100 jobs at $17.50 an hour and a lot of that money, those taxes could be used for recreation, public safety, and mental facilities," said Francisco Ramirez, Hanford City Council.

The facility would only be manufacturing marijuana for medicinal use-- there will be no dispensaries in the city.

Now that the ordinance has passed, it will have a second reading at the next council meeting and it could become effective 30 days after that.
