The south and northbound lanes of interstate five reopened to traffic without CHP escorts just after 8:00 Friday morning. For over an hour the CHP escorted cars over the grapevine, 500 cars at a time.
The main artery between Southern and Northern California shut down Wednesday night, stranding hundreds of drivers. Snow plows worked overtime to clear the roads but no one was allowed to get through until Friday morning.
