Pedestrian Safety

When the sun goes down, it can be nearly impossible to spot a pedestrian.

In fact, most of the 4,000 killed by cars each year are hit at night.

If sidewalks are not available, walk on the edge of the road or on the left shoulder of the road, facing the traffic flow.

Don't make the mistake of wearing dark clothes, you blend right in. Light-colored clothing definitely helps. So do reflective strips on your running shoes.

And Consumer Reports' tests show good reflective clothing makes you really stand out, like those two vests on the left.

As for drivers, keep your eyes open. More pedestrians are killed between 6 and 9 pm than at any other time.
