On-campus Murders Shaking up Deep South

3/8/2008 Police in Alabama have arrested a man in the shooting death of 18-year old Lauren Burke.

She was found suffering from a gunshot wound on the side of the road about 5 miles from the Auburn campus Tuesday night. She later died at a local hospital.

23-year old Courtney Lockhart faces a number charges including murder, kidnapping, robbery and attempted rape.

Tomas Dawson, Auburn Assistant Police Chief, says "This is a capital murder case and it involves the death penalty. We have the right individual in jail, I am 100% sure of that."

In the second unrelated killing, detectives in North Carolina have released surveillance photos of a suspect using the ATM card of the murdered student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Brian Curran, Chapel Hill Police Chief, says "We are now asking for any assistance the public can provide in making this identification."

22-year old Eve Carson was shot to death near campus.

This is a transcript of the 911 call that came into police early Wednesday shortly before she was found.

Caller: "there is just a scream and three shots. Uh, it sounded like a young woman." Dispatcher: "How long ago did this happen?" Caller: "Maybe five seconds. Dispatcher: "And you said you heard a scream." Caller: "Three Times"

Police say that Carson appears to be the victim of a random crime.

Friends and family of both young victims held a memorial service this evening. Both students will be buried Sunday.
