Car drives two miles in Muni tunnel

SAN FRANCISCO

A little bit before 2:00 am this morning, a car entered the West Portal Muni tunnel. It is a tunnel that is used just for trains. Luckily the rail line doesn't run in the middle of the night. Police say the man tried to run away, but they caught him. The suspect's Nissan Maxima was towed out of the tunnel.

Two long time Muni employees said the driver made it further into the tunnel then anyone they can remember. This has happened before, but this driver made it two miles before the tunnel narrowed to such a degree that the car got wedged in there.

Police have taken the suspect in for suspicion of drunk driving. There was some damage done to the equipment in the tunnel, but its not interfering with Muni service.
