Merced Reimbursed for Costly Trial

5/20/2008 Merced County, CA The 2007 trial of Tao Rivera was moved nearly 200 miles from Merced because of the publicity surrounding the case.

Officials say it cost the county more than one million dollars to pay for attorneys, lodging, and other expenses. But last week the state reimbursed the county for about 600 thousand dollars.

Mark Hendrickson, Dir. of Governmental Affairs, says "This is really a few years in the process and took an incredible amount of time to document and record each and every expenditure that was made and for that hard work, we were able to recoup for the county's taxpayers $612,339."

A jury found Rivera guilty and sentenced him to death for murdering Officer Stephan Gray in 2004.
