Grass Fire in East-Central Fresno

5/22/2008 Fresno, CA A fire late Wednesday night burned about five acres, mostly in the backyards of two homes on Belmont.

Firefighters say the flames were fueled by grass, brush, and even sheds in the yard, but their biggest challenge was the weather. "We had our hands full given that these winds are what we would consider high winds and they helped spread the fire fairly rapidly," said Rich Cabral with the Fresno Fire Department.

Firefighters got a perimeter around the fire and knocked it down in a little more than an hour.

They spent most of the night pouring water over the embers to make sure the high winds didn't start spreading the fire again.
