A man who escaped police custody Saturday night is in the hospital after being hit by a motorcycle.Investigators say it started when they responded to reports of drug dealing at the Motel Six on Blackstone Avenue.

The suspect was arrested because he had a warrant was out for his arrest. But somehow he managed to get the handcuffs off, got out of the unmarked car and then took off.

Jeff Cardinale, Fresno Police Department, says "It all happened very fast but I can say he had a small stature, was able to quickly get out...Within a matter of one to two seconds saw what happened gave chase and it lasted just a few seconds before he darted across the roadway before he was hit."

The driver of the motorcycle was not hurt but he was given a sobriety test. Investigators say he's not responsible for the accident.

The suspect, whose identity hasn't been released, is in the hospital with severe head injuries.
