Phelps Captures Third Gold Medal

Beijing, China There was no drama for Michael Phelps this time, just another gold medal. Phelps knocked nearly a second off his former record in the 200-meter freestyle, winning him his third gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, and bringing his career Olympic gold total to nine, tying him with Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and two others for the biggest stash of Olympic gold. Phelps still has five races ahead of him and hopes to win a record-breaking 8 gold medals.

"China is falling in love with him. The world now knows his name. He's no longer an American star. He's a world star," said ABC News Analyst Christine Brennan.

Phelps picked up another gold medal at the games when China's men's gymnastics team won the gold medal that many expected them to win in the team competition. But the surprise of the day came when the Americans took the bronze with a squad that was put together at the last minute when both Hamm brothers were knocked out of the competition with injuries.

In basketball, the U.S. women's team cruised past China with a 108-63 victory, led by the Houston Comets Tina Thompson. Thompson's 27 points tied for the fourth best single-game scoring output in women's Olympic history. The Americans will be vying for their fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
