Recent Salmonella Outbreak Warning Signs

August 19, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
It appears there was a warning sign ahead of the recent salmonella outbreak, traced to Mexican peppers, which made 1,400 people sick. An Associated Press review of Food and Drug Administration records found federal inspectors at U.S. border crossings repeatedly turned back dirty, disease-ridden shipments of peppers from Mexico in the months before the outbreak.

Even so, no larger action was taken, and FDA officials had said they were surprised by the outbreak because the peppers had not been a problem.

The FDA says it was referring to outbreaks of illness, not shipments discovered to be tainted and turned back.
