California Wildfires

Fresno, CA, USA About 250 people have been evacuated in Yuba County. The blaze broke out north of the Yuba County Airport Monday evening. About 100 acres have been scorched so far.

The Yuba County Sheriff's Department said some people who were asked to leave earlier in the day have been able to return to their homes. No word yet on what sparked the flames.

Evacuation orders have been lifted as firefighters gain on a wildfire in the eastern Sierra. Officials said the fire in the scenic Hope Valley south of Lake Tahoe has burned about 150 acres and is 30 percent contained.

An air tanker helping to fight that fire near Hope Valley crashed after takeoff just north of Reno Monday night. All three crew members on board were killed.

The twin-engine P-2-V air tanker had been dropping retardant on the wildfire earlier in the day. Preliminary reports from witnesses suggest the tanker lost a piece of its engine or a wing after its takeoff.
