Fresno Fair Preview

September 8, 2008 8:09:16 PM PDT
"Buy ahead and save some money" could be the new slogan for the Big Fresno Fair this year. In an attempt to make a trip to the fair more affordable valley residents, fair officials are offering discount packages. And there's no reason why anyone should have to pay full price to get in this year.Crews are working furiously trying to complete the latest changes at the Big Fresno Fair. Over the last four years the fair board has spent in excess of 7 million dollars on capital improvements at the fairgrounds making it a more family friendly environment.

The Kings Canyon Avenue entrance is the last gate to be upgraded at the fair. Water falls, palm trees and lots of shade will greet visitors who no longer have to stand on the sidewalk waiting to get in. While the petting zoo made an exit from the fair last year, something called "Ag-ventures" will now occupy part of the livestock pavilion.

Laurie King, Deputy Fair Manager says, "It is a hands-on, inter-active, animal agriculture exhibit for kids. They get to learn how to saddle a pony, and they get to go through a little treasure hunt through corn kernels. So that one's really fun. It's all inter-active and hands on."

Understanding how tough it is for families to make ends meet right now.... fair officials want to help make their brand of entertainment more affordable.

Laurie King says, "We've always had a lot of discounts that you could partake of but this year we have a discount every day. So there's something for everyone to get you out to the fair."

Discounted entrance tickets and reduced midway ride tickets can be purchased at the fair office or online before September 30th.

Last's fair attendance was a little over 500-thousand people. Fair officials are hoping with the extra day this year and with the discounts they're offering, they'll get at least that many people this year.
