The ceremonies took place at Ground Zero in New York, the Pentagon and the field in western Pennsylvania where United Airlines flight 93 went down.

In New York, there were several moments of silence Thursday morning. The first one at 8:46am, the moment the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center; the last one at 10:29am to mark when the last twin tower fell.

For the second year now, the memorial service took place in a park just east of here due to construction underway at Ground Zero of a memorial and the Freedom Tower, one of four proposed towers. Both presidential candidates are expected to visit the site Thursday afternoon.
