Large Fire at Clovis Apartment Complex

Clovis, CA, USA "Flames. The whole building was in flames. The whole building," said resident Rosa Linda Bonilla.

Bonilla watched as firefighters put out the fire. "I was scared because usually fire spreads. I thought it was going to come over here," said Bonilla.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the balcony area of one of the upstairs units.

Neighbors said they ran outside, after fellow residents began banging on doors. "You're afraid because you see the smoke and you don't even know how the fire would react to the wood or the walls, or ceiling. You get a little fear in you because you don't know if it's going to spread to your apartment or not ," said Martin Hernandez.

Because the fire happened so close to the Fresno/Clovis boundary, firefighters got help from both Fresno Fire and Calfire. "This is a great example of our automatic aid working between Clovis, Calfire, and Fresno Fire," said Clovis Fire Department spokesperson Chad Fitzgerald.

Firefighters were able to keep the damage to eight units. The Red Cross is assisting those who have been displaced.
