Big Crowds at Fair Despite Rain

10/4/2008 Fresno, CA, USA Rain water spilled into storm drains as hundreds of people arrived at the fair Saturday morning. Rick Shepard and his family walked into the fair wearing rain coats. "I figured no one else would be here. It's raining; no one wants to come out in the rain. Guess what? Bring the kids, get through the fair quick," said Shepard.

His daughter, Katherine, couldn't wait to get her fair experience started. "I really like the fair. Even though it's really cold, I just really want to see the animals." Katherine was also excited that she got to wear her new jacket for the first time.

Rosa Bivings says her family comes to the Big Fresno Fair every year during its first weekend. "Every year, rain or shine, it doesn't matter… We just love coming. Corndogs! Just the atmosphere - look at this!" said Bivings.

While things looked a little slow at one of the ice cream stands Saturday morning, vendors told Action News they weren't worried. "We had a rainy day last year at the fair and it didn't bother us at all. People still got ice cream," said Paula Stone.

As the skies cleared, the crowds slowly got bigger. Fair organizers say the rain isn't enough to keep people away and many are actually embracing the change. "It's cool, it's nice. This is better than 108, 110," said John Alkire, the fair's CEO.
