Volunteers Hit the Phones for McCain, Obama

Local volunteers with both presidential campaigns are working feverishly to reach out to voters in these last days. And as Obama and McCain supporters hit the phones, they're targeting voters here and across the country. At the Obama headquarters in downtown Fresno, volunteers are only calling voters in battleground states like Florida and Nevada. "Because California is pretty much spoken for, we're doing what we can in California right now is help support the on the ground efforts in battleground states," said Obama volunteer Debilyn Molineaux.

But at the Republican headquarters in northeast Fresno, volunteers are focusing on voters here in Fresno County, urging them to vote for John McCain. "I don't believe the polls. I just know we're really close and if we keep pushing we'll do it," said McCain volunteer Jackie Sargent.

Both campaigns are reporting new energy as they head into Election Day. "It's just been incredible the number- the level of excitement and the number of people that want to be involved in this campaign, it's truly, truly special," said Molineaux.

Fred Vanderhoof with the Fresno County Republican Party said momentum has been building since McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. "It's been constant. I've been involved since 1992 and I don't think I've ever seen this much enthusiasm," said Vanderhoof.

Together, both sides will make thousands of calls over the next few days. And volunteers say they'll do whatever it takes to get their candidate elected. "This is really an historic event. To finally have an African American running for president and I think that - of course I believe he's the smartest person running," said Obama Volunteer Arthelma Johnson.

McCain supporter Jackie Sargent said this is the first time she's campaigned on behalf of a candidate. "When John McCain announced that Sarah Palin was his running mate, it just supercharged me and I just had to get out and get this team elected," said Sargent.

Volunteers at both the Obama and the Republican headquarters say they'll make be making phone calls until the polls close; each hoping their voice will make a difference.
