Getting Out The Vote

November 4, 2008 12:32:41 AM PST
It's not just the presidential candidates who are up late tonight. There's plenty of activity across the valley as people work to get out the vote.If your phone has been ringing, you are not alone, with Election Day just hours away passionate candidates and voters are up late tonight, calling, knocking on doors and waving signs.

On the very same street corner, those for and against prop 8 worked to sway voters at the last minute. One of many final pushes before Election Day.

At republican headquarters, volunteers worked the phones urging valley voters to get out. Even if it's late Tuesday.

Fred Vanderhoof said, "We wanna make sure that we get all of our voters here in California because we've got down ticket races from Mayor, Danny Gilmore, Proposition 8, so forth so we need every vote up til 8:00 tomorrow."

At Obama headquarters volunteers phoned voters in swing states, like Colorado, Nevada and Arizona.

Democratic Volunteer T.J. Cox said, "From old people to young people across all the ethnic groups, Latinos, Asians, African Americans, it's all positive. They can't wait to get to the polls tomorrow because it's a transformational day."

Supervisor Henry Perea along with other family members waved signs downtown Monday afternoon encouraging voters to cast a vote for Henry T. Perea.

Perea spoke to supporters at Fresno State.

Perea said, "Let's make sure tomorrow that Washington DC isn't the only city that sees change tomorrow, that Fresno, California also sees change. Thank you for your support. I look forward to working with you for the next four years."

Across town, Ashley Swearengin spent Monday evening personally reminding voters to get out and asking for their support.

Swearengin said, "Very anxious, we're real excited. There's a lot of work that's gone into the campaign and it's a little bit surreal to believe it's the night before Election Day, I can hardly believe it."

Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. But as long as you're in line by 8:00, you'll be allowed to vote.
