Local Disaster Drill

11/15/2008 Fresno, CA, USA Emergency managers in the valley tested their preparations for a major disaster, imitating what would happen here if a giant earthquake struck down near L.A.

More than five million people took part in the drill on Thursday, but after a quake hits, evacuees would pour into the Fresno area.

State homeland security operatives say local emergency managers did a great job, but no matter how good they are, everybody better be ready. Matthew Bettenhausen, California Department of Homeland Security, says "But government and our volunteers and the Red Cross -- we're going to be overwhelmed in a major disaster. That means you need to be prepared. You have an individual responsibility to yourself and to your families to get ready."

Clovis and Sacramento emergency responders practiced a similar scenario back in April, just in case they get called in to help in the disaster zone.
