Employees at Sierra Summit are hoping this upcoming storm will help cover the hills with snow, and kick off the ski season. The resort is preparing to open the beginner hill this Friday. The grooming machine is out. And the ski boots are locked in. Employees at Sierra Summit are getting ready to open this holiday weekend.

"We'll have our beginner area, which we're standing on now and our learning area which is behind us and that will be pretty much it for the weekend. But, there's plenty of snow for people to come up and enjoy," said Boomer Devaurs.

The majority of Sierra Summit is dry right now, but they are using man-made snow here to get ready to open this weekend. And employees say, despite the bad economy, they're not worried for this season, at least not yet.

"It's our hope that people will stay closer to home and maybe not travel as much to some of the destination resorts and visit us."

Businesses in nearby Shaver Lake are just as optimistic. Employees at Shaver Lake Village Hotel say despite few reservations this weekend, they're anticipating a busy winter. Store owner, Norman Kato says he too, has seen business slow down over the last several months.

"We're all basically going through the same thing, expenses are continue to rise, but we have to, as long as we stay focused and maintain, we'll be okay."

Making sure they'll be okay is one reason Sierra Summit will open this weekend. The resort is selling season passes at a discounted rate ... something it does every year. And, despite a small hike in lift ticket fees, they've slashed prices on some of their packaged deals.

"We're optimistic. I think we're going to have a great winter."
