Merced Officer Involved Shooting

Merced, CA, USA The man has been identified as 53 year old Andrew Solis.

Police say Solis was holding the replica gun to his head near the busy intersection of Yosemite Parkway and Union Avenue. But when the first officer arrived, police say Solis aimed the gun at him. That's when the officer fired several shots, hitting Solis in the groin and leg.

He is expected to recover. The officer is on administrative leave, but a commander for the department say officers have the right to fire if they fear for their lives.

Cmdr. Floyd Higdon of the Merced Police Dept. said, "Anytime an officer comes up to a gun, a gun is displayed, the officers are going to take precautions to save themselves."

This was the second officer-involved shooting in Merced in just one week. Last Wednesday officers shot and injured drug suspect Anthony Trammel after they say he fired several shots in their direction.
