Travel Troubles with Mexicana Airlines

Fresno, CA, USA Francisco Barriga and his family were hoping to be in Guadalajara Mexico by 6:00 Tuesday morning but an overbooked flight had them waiting at Fresno-Yosemite International, wondering what went wrong.

"Mexicana Airlines sold too many tickets, more than there are seats so he won't be able to leave right now he'll have to leave tomorrow morning," said Miguel Jimenez.

They weren't the only Mexicana customers left without a seat in recent days. At least 18 people were also bumped off the 1:00 a.m. flight on Monday morning ... Including Reedley farmer David Jackson, who's in Hermosillo Mexico on a business trip.

"I asked him how often they overbook and he said last year we never overbooked but this year this is the second time but its been two days in a row," said Jackson.

Because Mexicana flies out of Fresno only once a day, some upset passengers were offered taxi rides to LAX, but their luggage went on a separate taxi and somehow ended up in San Diego. Jackson, decided to drive to LAX on his own.

"It just seemed like they were going to ship them off and tell them good luck in Los Angeles and maybe you can get out a day from now you know," said Jackson.

Overbooking flights is not unusual or illegal many airlines do it to make up for last minute cancellations or no-shows. In such cases, Mexicana Airline's website explains people who are denied boarding are entitled to compensation … Of the airlines choosing.

Jackson, who's family welcomes visitors to Fresno on this billboard at the Fresno Yosemite Airport, says the overbooking is not what upset him.

"To grossly overbook and then not take care of their people thats wrong," said Jackson.

While Jackson was denied a refund, Barriga and his family received $600 vouchers before they went back home to Atwater, only to make that same hour drive back to F-Y-I the next morning.

Next time I'll think twice before flying with Mexicana…he says because here you have your paid ticket and for them, it's like you had nothing.

We contacted a spokesperson for Mexicana Airlines-- but as of this newscast, the airline has not responded to these incidents.
