Rebels claim to kill 130 Sri Lankan troops

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA

The rebel-linked Web site TamilNet says the rebels repelled a multi-front offensive Tuesday by government forces seeking to break through the Tamil Tiger defenses in the north.

The government said Tuesday that 120 rebels and 25 soldiers were killed in the fighting and 10 other soldiers were missing.

Fighting in the 25-year-old civil war has heated up amid a heavy government offensive in recent months. Both sides are known to exaggerate enemy losses and underreport their own.
