Holiday Shoppers Spending Less

Fresno, CA, USA Only one shopping day until Christmas and many last minute shoppers are loaded with bags. In order to stay under budget Marco Elizondo and Kristine Fox says not everyone is getting a gift.

"Some of the older kids got squeezed out."

"Within my family we giving the one gift exchange or not giving a gift this year."

Fox says there are some exceptions to the rule. "With my husband no. I always have to get him a lot because he gets me a lot."

According to a recent poll conducted by Survey USA 78 percent of valley shoppers say they're sticking to their budget, while 17 percent are not. So how'd they do it? Linda Lively says her family opened a Christmas account last year--saving nearly 12 hundred dollars.

"We were able to put money in the bank every month at the end of the month, end of November we were able to take it out and buy Christmas presents."

Most shoppers like Sylvia Baeza admit they are cutting back this year, but its numbers like 50 to 75 percent off that is helping them stretch their dollars. "I'm just concentrating on sales racks."

Kelly Tallant with Fashion Fair Mall says some stores are slashing prices in order to attract more customers, some by as much as 70 to 80 percent. "A lot of merchants are doing buy one get one half off."

That seems like a deal to Daniel Barraga. "Since prices might be going up we might as well take advantage this year before they start going up next year."

Fox says when all else fails. "Give the gift of love that always goes a long way."

Retailers say this year some of those deep discounts will continue after Christmas day to help boost sales.
