Fresno State Students Assist in Home Building

Fresno, CA, USA But not without the help of some dedicated construction crews working around the clock, including some builders in training.

This is the last day of construction. On the long list of things to finish today, back yard prep and landscaping and the completion of tile, flooring, painting and appliances.

Work crews said they're ahead of schedule.

Tuesday night, workers installed cabinets, doors and baseboards. Solar panels were put up on the roof to make the home energy efficient. And painting crews have been at it since 2:00am Tuesday morning.

For a group of Fresno State volunteers, the experience on site is as real as it gets. The students with the construction management program have been vital to the effort. "A little bit of everything, anything they need, cleanup, carpentry work, directing subs, moving subs, directing people around, it's been a great experience," said recent Fresno State graduate Matt Thomas.

"Just the sheer pace of it and all the different trades working together really excited me. And it's been really interested and fun to see it being built in such a short amount of time," said student Matt Kelsey.

And that deadline is fast approaching. Wednesday is furniture move-in day. Then the Riojas family returns Thursday, when the home will be revealed when they "move that bus."

And what a surprise awaits: the home has more than doubled in size. It's gone from 1,300 square feet to 3,200 square feet.

There's a silent auction Tuesday night to help the Riojas family pay off their existing mortgage. It's at 6 pm at Brentwood Loma Vista at Shaw and Dewolf in Clovis. You can bid on a 4-person sneak peek tour of the finished home even before the reveal to the Riojas family. You can also bid on a 2-person ride on "move that bus" during the reveal. All bids must be placed in person on Tuesday night.

If you're a spectator, donations will be accepted daily on site. You can fill the bucket with change, cash or checks and get an "extreme supporter" sticker as a sign of your support.
