Investigators say the two were in a stolen red sedan and refused to pull over when officers tried to stop them near orange cove. That's when officers started a pursuit that ended in gunfire a few minutes later in sanger. But so far there's no indication as to what led to the use of deadly force.
Arley Terrence from the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said, "At this point in the investigation ... we're still interviewing the officers so anything I say would be premature ... we won't have a full picture of why the officers fired until the investigation is complete."
Several streets were shut down near the crime scene and a nearby school was briefly put on lockdown. One neighbor says the chase and shooting has changed the way she feels about where she lives.
Lupe Miramontez said, "Scared. I didn't hear nothing. It could have gone into the house, and I wouldn't have known because it was so close."
Investigators say both suspects are validated gang members and that the man who died had previously served time for auto theft.
They also say no weapons were found inside the stolen car, but their investigation is ongoing.
