Merced Dr. Martin Luther King March

January 19, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
Hundreds of Merced area residents came out today for a special march honoring Doctor King. The event kicked off with a parade and a marching band. A number of marchers wore costumes from different eras including the Tuskegee airmen of World War II.

Organizers said this year's event was even more special with the inauguration of Barack Obama.

"Because we now have a black man that's going to be inaugurated for president of the United States of America and will be the most powerful man in the world. And he's a black man which is a crescendo of what this event is all about, accepting each other as we are," said event organizer Dwight Amey.

This was the 13th year for the Unity Celebration in Merced.
