The City of Merced is on a list no one wants to be on. According to the United States Labor Department: out of the biggest 369 cities in the country, Merced ranks second in having the highest unemployment at 15.5 percent.

Only El Centro California has a higher unemployment rate at 22.6 percent.

After Merced is Yuma, Arizona at 15.4 percent.

The list compiled by the Labor Department doesn't include several smaller cities in the Central Valley such as Mendota and Firebaugh, which have unemployment rates of about 30 percent.
