Same-sex marriage couples across the country tried to apply for marriage licenses Thursday, only to be turned away at their county clerk's office.Several couples were turned away at the clerk's office in Downtown Fresno Thursday afternoon. The attempts were part of a protest against court and voter decisions restricting gay marriage.

There are already 18,000 same-sex couples married in California, but the passage of Proposition 8 means couples can no longer marry.

Gay rights supporters declared Thursday "National Freedom to Marry Day". A candlelight vigil and rally took place Thursday evening in Visalia.
