The first step toward building a home for some prehistoric discoveries has been taken with...what else...a little digging. Madera County Officials broke ground at the site of what will be the Fossil Discovery Center. For the last 16 years paleontologist have been digging up mammoth bones and other ancient fossils at the city landfill in the town of Fairmead.

It started with the discovery of a 500-thousand year old tusk. The Discovery Center will be home to many of the artifacts unearthed during the on-going excavation.

It will be located just off of Highway 99 in Chowchilla. The center will include exhibit areas, a mock dig area, and a fossil preparation station where volunteers will clean and identify specimens.

The first phase is scheduled to open in August.
