Republicans Demote Modesto Senator

February 18, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
State budget negotiations have taken a turn after Republicans demoted a Valley lawmaker. Early Wednesday morning, Republican senators voted to remove Modesto Senator Dave Cogdill as Minority Leader.

They replaced Cogdill with Senator Dennis Hollingsworth of Murrieta. Cogdill said the group was upset with tax increases he agreed to in the budget proposal.

The shift in lawmakers could derail already strained budget talks by requiring Democrats and Governor Schwarzenegger to renegotiate with a new Republican leader.

The senate remains a single republican vote short of passing a Budget.

Republican Senator Abel Maldanado of Santa Maria who many had hoped might become the final vote for the budget; said Cogdill's ouster will likely be bad for negotiations.
