An ambitious new program recently launched in Fresno County. Its goal is to help 10,000 people open a bank account and receive the education necessary to manage it successfully. Many of those, will be Latinos, who make up the largest percentage of the "unbanked" population in the Central Valley.
The Mexican government is making the transfer of money south of the border easier, and less expensive. Representatives from Mexico's National Savings and Financial Services Bank were in the Valley this month to help launch "Directo A Mexico"... It's a new partnership between U.S. and Mexican commercial banks and credit unions that will give Valley residents a new option for sending money to their loved ones in Mexico.
A respected Valley physician was recently honored by Maybelline New York. Doctor Katherine Flores of Fresno was selected from thousands of entries across the United States as one of ten recipients of the Maybelline New York Beauty of Education Awards. The award recognizes women who motivate, mentor and make a difference in their community through the power of education. Doctor Flores helped create Doctor's Academy at Sunnyside High School and Junior Doctors Academy to help disadvantaged Valley students become better prepared for careers in health and medicine
