Luciano Suzana painted the walls of this dining room with two coats to give it a fresh new look. Two days and two gallons later, the job was done.
But today paints from Kilz, Behr, Valspar, and others claim you can get one-coat coverage.
Consumer reports paint expert Rico De Paz used this test to check those claims. Consumer reports tests each paint in several colors, along with white. They use a battery of tests to rate each paint. One determines how well paint resists greasy stains and a fade test measures how well it maintains its color in sunny rooms.
In the end, the top rating went to Behr Premium Plus. The $24-dollar-a-gallon home depot Paint is a consumer reports best buy.
While it's not the best choice for a sunny room, as it tends to fade, it does a very good job of covering, even with just one coat.
