Push for Fresno Police Auditor

March 18, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Fresno's mayor and police chief are pushing their idea for an independent police auditor to community groups.Mayor Ashley Swearengin and Chief Jerry Dyer appeared before a small gathering at a downtown church Wednesday night. They brought the police auditor from Santa Cruz with them. Robert Aaronson endorsed the police auditor plan that's being proposed for Fresno. He said it can help keep things honest. "an auditor can make it much more difficult for something to be covered up. Can and auditor assure that it will never occur? That's an unrealistic statement, but it makes it much, much more difficult to cover up."

Some critics of the mayor's plan feel her auditor would not be independent enough from police. The Fresno City Council is expected to act on the mayor's plan for a police auditor next week.
