A nasty computer infection threatens to launch itself in millions of computers Wednesday, just in time for April fool's day.The Conficker Worm has been out there since last November. But a new launch could mean a new round of PC infections. Experts say the worm can hijack computers even without users noticing, exploiting a security gap in Microsoft Windows.

Protection Tips

  • Download and install all security updates from Microsoft.
  • Update Passwords.
  • Don't insert unknown USB devices in your PC.
  • Don't buy anti-virus software from unknown vendors.

Nicholas Thompson from Wired Magazine said, "They'll use it to turn your computer into a machine that will send out spam for them, they'll data mine your computer, get all your information and sell that information. So, you really don't want this on your computer."

Microsoft patched the hole last fall. But if your PC was already infected, Conficker would have blocked the fix, and other antivirus updates.
