Robert Reid owns the local franchise for Valpak, those envelopes filled with coupons that arrive in your mailbox. Reid says he's seen a 10% increase over last year in the number of people using his coupons.

From dining to dry cleaning, Reid explains, the savings can be significant: "People are now looking for coupons actively. Buy one dinner, get one free, buy one, get one half off. It's the deciding factor if they're going to go out to eat, because the economy has changed so much in the last 18 months."

Businesses, such as Farmer Boys restaurant in Clovis, say coupons are becoming one of the most effective ways to get customers in the door, with as much as 60% to 80% of new diners bringing in coupons.
