Hiker Falls to Death

Fresno, CA This is a look at half dome from Turtleback Mountain Saturday, just after the accident that killed 40-year-old Menage Kumar.

You can see it's cloudy and rangers say there was hail and snow Saturday afternoon.

Sunday, the view was a lot clearer and the climb would be a lot safer. That's basically the message park rangers want hikers to get, "Look at the weather. If it looks like it's going to rain or it's cloudy or there's lightning, use your discretion. Don't go up. Granite is very slippery when it's wet, especially when there's hail and snow mixed up in there. And I realize a lot of people come to the park just to make that hike, but your life is not worth the hike."

Yosemite Rangers put cables in place on Half Dome in Mid-May and warned hikers to use extreme caution in wet weather.

They had to evacuate 41 hikers off the trail Saturday after Kumar fell. He's the first person to fall off the trail in two years.
