Flag Retirement Ceremony

Fresno, CA Worn and tattered flags were cut into pieces and then burned during this flag disposal ceremony at Fresno's Marine Reserve Training Center.

The flags are collected from the public over the course of a year, and then disposed of during the annual ceremony.

Organizers say it's important that Americans not only honor our country's flag by flying them proudly, but also by disposing of them properly when necessary.

Don Soper, Marine Corp League said, "The ceremony that goes with it is to give due credit to the flag that flies over the freest, greatest country in the world."

A few girl scouts were on hand to help during today's ceremony. Organizers say the ceremonious retirement of flags is not just about respect, it's also the law.
