Fresno Man Killed over a Bike

June 22, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Police say a 61-year old man was killed over a bike at a Southeast Fresno bus stop.Family members have identified the victim as Jorge Niño De Rivera.

It happened at almost 10:00 Monday morning, not far from the victim's Southeast Fresno home. Family members say for years, the victim's passion was working on bikes ... sadly his custom bike is what may have made him a target.

Devastated family members returned Monday evening to the bus stop where Jorge Nino De Rivera was brutally shot in the chest.

Police say the attack was followed by a brief confrontation.

Lt. Tony Bennink said, "There was no one else at the bus stop. We have witnesses within a block of that location that were on foot. The bus was approaching."

Police say witnesses told them the suspects left the area carting off a bike believed to be the victim's.

Nino De Rivera's relatives say he was riding a black mountain bike he built with valuable custom parts on it. Police want the bike as evidence. The victim's children want it back for it's sentimental value.

Victim's Daughter in Law Laila Cardosa said, "I would love to find the bike. The bike would serve as a memory for us. And apart from that especially find who did this to him. Because no person in this world should deserve to be out on the streets killing someone over a bike."

Family members drove by the crime scene Monday morning without knowing it was their loved one who was fatally shot.

The 61 year old is a father of six. His youngest daughter just graduated from high school.

Accepting his death is especially difficult because it seems so senseless.

"It's a tragedy. I mean i don't even know how to explain it," said Cardosa.

Police only have a vague description of the suspects. Family members say the bike can be identified easily because it has a crack on the frame above the chain. Again, it is a men's black mountain bike.

If you have any information about the bike or the suspects, Fresno Police homicide investigators would like to hear you.
