Arambula says he made the change because of differences with the Democratic Party over how to solve the state's budget problems.
Arambula has faced criticism from within his own party in the past.
In 2006, he was forced to move into a smaller capitol office after he broke from fellow democrats and voted against a package of bills because they didn't include money for more water storage.
Arambula is serving his final term in the state assembly. He will be termed out in 2010.
