The boy had gone out near the buoys and nobody knows why, but he suddenly went under. One of the chaperones jumped in to rescue him, but she got in trouble too.
Erica Stuart, Madera County Sheriff's Department said, "He started to pull her under. Other people went and pulled both of them out. She wasn't breathing well, but she was breathing. He wasn't breathing at all and they pronounced him dead."
The woman is in stable condition at Community Regional Medical Center, she's expected to make a full recovery.
The boy is the third drowning victim in Madera County this year. Investigators are looking into whether a medical condition played a role in his drowning.
