Keeping Cool at the Merced County Fair

It is opening day of the Merced County Fair and the extreme heat has animal exhibitors taking extreme precaution for their livestock and themselves.                  |   Watch Video Above for Extended Coverage   |

Handlers and animals had to keep their cool under intense rays and temperatures in the 100s. Many now bring high powered fans and misters to the fairgrounds for themselves and their livestock. Some handlers say they've lost prized animals during the fair because of the heat.

The hard work that goes into these livestock shows can often take a human toll. Last year several kids passed out in the barn and were taken to the hospital with heat related illnesses.
