U.S. Marines Battle Taliban Town in Afghanistan

U.S. Marines are battling to gain control of a strategic Taliban-held town in Southern Afghanistan.Journalists travelling with the first wave said the marines were met with small arms, mortar and rocket-propelled grenade fire. Other marines met heavy resistance as they fought to seize control of the mountains surrounding the town.

U.S., N.A.T.O. and Afghan troops are working to protect voting sites around the country ahead of next week's presidential election.

Taliban militants have vowed to disrupt the balloting.
