Chino Prison Riot Causes Major Damage

Fresno, Calif. "It kicked off in one unit, one housing unit. The other seven housing units, or I should say six housing units, began to simultaneously fighting within the units," said Mark Hargrove with the Department of Corrections.

Inside sinks were ripped from the walls, mattresses torn to shreds and clothes littering the floors.

At least 175 inmates were hurt in the violence, 55 were sent to the hospital.

Seven units in the prison's Reception Centre West were left uninhabitable and more than 1,100 inmates have been moved to other facilities. One of the dormitories was completely gutted by flames.

Prison officials said the riot was caused by racial tension between black and Hispanic inmates.
