August 13, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
For the past four years Fresno Unified's School District has improved proficiency scores, and administrators said this year has shown the biggest gains yet. Fresno Unified's Superintendent Michael Hanson said now the district is starting to see rapid improvement in English, language arts and math achievement scores.

26 percent of students are proficient in English and math this year compared to 19 percent in 2006. While great progress is being made schools still have a long way to go to reach district goals.

In math, 39 percent of students are proficient or advanced.

Hanson said that improves the lives of nearly 2,000 students. "That's 2,000 students graduating on time, that's 2,000 students gainfully employed."
