Welty Warns of More Fresno State Layoffs

Fresno, Calif. President John Welty spoke to faculty members during his annual speech highlighting the successes and challenges the campus will face in the coming school year. He said the university has had to cap student enrollment, hike student fees and eliminate more than 70 faculty positions.

Welty warned that more layoffs could come in the new school year. "We need to eliminate another 50 management and staff positions through retirement, attrition, or layoffs."

Fresno State is facing a projected $44 million dollar budget deficit in the 2009 - 2010 school year. The first day of classes for students is next Monday.
